Re: Controller Wiring
dont use that method !! Unless you want your controllers incompatible with everyones set up !! We use: Tip - Power (white) Ring - Track (black) Sleeve - Brake (0V - Red) |

Re: Controller Wiring
Nahhh. It is the wiring you keep telling people that you have done. When I first got my controllers, wired them up as per Greg's instructions and I had to change them when I got to your place. All good though. You have set the standard for the rest of us. BTW. what do you think about Cam's new sockets and plugs. I am glad I got cheap plugs and sockets from Dick Smith. They work. Anybody else planning to change their ends? Cam, What sort of plugs are they again and how do we wire them? |

Re: Controller Wiring
Dont use 1/4" jack plugs they suck Use 3 pin XLR's Much more reliable ! As for wiring it would be, Pin 1, Brake (red) pin 2, Power (white) pin 3, track (black) this way you can use a standard 1/4" -> XLR adaptor w/o issues As for my sockets, i've been talking to a supplier and will be getting some different sockets that are meant to be ok, the ones that are the real mccoy of what i have are $12 ea !! screw that ! the XLR metal locking sockets are about $3.50-$4 !! Re: Controller Wiring
Yes - Cams post is how I wire mine as well. I do like my 1/4 plugs though. My female sockets are exposed, meaning I can (if needed) bend or modify the contacts as I see fit. No need yet though as no real problems. |

Re: Controller Wiring
Has anyone considered using protection on their control circuits ?? I've just wired in my 2nd bank of controllers today and have already fried 1x tomy controller due to a controller (with brakes) being plugged in on the 2nd bank on the same lane ! The 2nd controller with the brakes shorts the 2 rails and the 1st controller just seems to go into melt down when you try and make the car move ! I'm sure on a 5A supply this wouldnt be that much of a big deal, as it would just shut down, but my 20A supply likes to fry things As a resuly i'm thinking about putting in a circuit breaker per controller spot! Altronics sell them in various ratings, I'm thinking about going for 3A. Anyone have and ideas about going for a higher rating ? i dont think many cars are likly to continually draw over 3A ! the breakers i'm looking at are http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=item&id=S5503 Cam |

Re: Controller Wiring
3amps sounds about right Cam. Ocassionally a JL will position itself on a hairpin to short out two tracks on the one lane. My power supply will just shut down above 5amps but with your brute, anything can happen. Karl |

Re: Controller Wiring
3 amps doesn't sound big enough, esp. for open type cars. What if you get a rider (2 cars on the one lane)? |

Re: Controller Wiring
well i ordered the 3amp breakers today ! So i guess we'll see ! they claim to take 145% of their rated load for 1 hr, so thats 4.5 amps almost ! and for a very short duration they should be ok for 5A spikes. (rated at 200% for 1 min) But the proof is in the pudding ! i'll know on the weekend ! Cam |

Re: Controller Wiring
Mine used to smoke but didn't burn out. Somthing to do with the size of the power supply I guess. I rewired my so I could only have one controller at a time as it was just to easy to forget. |

Re: Controller Wiring
Well this one sure died the spring was glowing red hot ! And deformed ! I'm going to persist with the controllers on both sides, my track is just too annoying to have everyone on 1 side, esp when there is only 2-4 people ! Cam |

Re: Controller Wiring
Cam That power supply of yours really has some kick doesn't it. I think the idea of having the choice of racing from either side is great. As you say, allows you to be flexible depending on the numbers. You could always install a set of switches so you could switch which side was active for each lane. |

Switches ?? Nah, too basic The circuit breakers will be a good think for other faults too ! Like you said this supply I have does have some kick to it Cam |
